How to Check a Used Phone Before Buying in India
Start with the phone’s identity and condition, test its everyday functions, then complete seller handover checks before payment. Use PhonePakka’s free 38-check tool to record what worked, what failed and what you could not check.
1. Compare the phone and its identity
Ask the seller to show the model and IMEI on the actual phone. Compare these with available purchase proof and the live official Sanchar Saathi response. An IMEI checksum only checks number format; it is not a blacklist or ownership check.

2. Inspect the screen, body and ports
Look under good light for cracks, dents, gaps, camera-glass damage and corrosion. Ask permission before removing the case. Do not force connectors, pry open the phone or perform a water test. Stop charging if you suspect swelling.
3. Test touch, display, sound and buttons
Drag across the full touchscreen and try multi-touch. Look at solid display colours for obvious dots or lines. Play sound, record and replay your voice, make a consenting test call, and try power and volume buttons. Browser observations and what you personally hear are different kinds of evidence.
4. Check every camera mode
Try front and rear cameras, and each optical lens the model actually has. Photograph nearby text and a distant object, test focus, and record a short video with speech. Inspect the saved clip. A browser may expose fewer camera inputs than the native Camera app; digital zoom does not prove a telephoto lens works.
5. Try connectivity and charging
Check Wi-Fi and mobile data separately, make a SIM call and send and receive a harmless SMS with a consenting person. Try a compatible Bluetooth accessory and a known-good charger. Charges may apply to calls or messages. No signal or denied browser permission is not, by itself, proof of faulty hardware.
6. Review battery information and seller accounts
Review battery-health information where the phone exposes it. Charge percentage is not battery health. Ask the seller to sign out and remove their account association themselves. If both parties agree to a reset after backup, witness online setup and check for previous-owner or organisation prompts. Never request the seller’s password.
7. Save the report and review unknowns
